World Password Day: Don't Let Weak Passwords Make You an Easy Target

Today is world password day. There is perhaps no better day than today to review your password hygiene and be sure you are protecting your online accounts as best as possible. While typing in a password to access one of tens or hundreds of services that you use has likely become an everyday part of your life, we should all take time to make sure our passwords are complex and difficult to hack to protect our various accounts.

Strong password hygiene has been a main focus of cybersecurity experts for years, but it continues to be an overlooked detail by many users. A recent study by Clario OnePoll suggests that three-quarters of millennials in America use the same password for ten different devices, apps, and other social media accounts.

Practicing good password hygiene is one of the most essential security measures to deter online intruders. Often people choose easy-to-remember passwords rather than focusing on security. As data breaches continue to be of rising concern and large numbers of usernames and passwords continuously are dumped on the dark web daily, strong passwords are more important than ever.

In celebration of National Password Day here are some key take-aways to consider when setting and passwords for your various accounts and devices:

  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible

  • Use passphrases instead of passwords

  • Avoid reusing passwords for multiple accounts

  • Protect your password list

  • Use a mix of lower case and upper case letters, numbers, and at least one special character

  • Change your passwords frequently

Using passwords to safeguard our accounts, devices, and apps is a practice that has no sign of going away anytime soon. It is important that passwords do not become an easy penetrable door for hackers to access your private data and information. At the end of the day, a strong password means a secured account.
